Red Cross make plea to employers

The British Red Cross is calling on employers to do more to cut work injuries caused by moving and handling.

The appeal comes in the run-up to next week's European Week for Safety and Health at Work, which this year has the theme "Lighten the Load", and it is hoped the number of personal injury compensation claims resulting from work accidents will be reduced because of the initiative.

A spokeswoman for the British Red Cross said, "The number of Britons suffering injuries through moving and handling at work has increased virtually every year since 1999. Yet, as working in industrial environments continues to decline and office-based work increases, they should be declining."

Figures recently released by the Health and Safety Executive revealed that moving and handling personal injuries account for a massive 41 percent of all long-term absence from work in the UK.

A spokesman from Accident Compensation People, the work injury claim experts, commented on the issue, saying, "Most work injuries are preventable by proper training and education and employers need to make it their duty to safeguard their staff from injury."
