Mesothelioma on the increase in the UK
A report commissioned by the British Thoracic Society has revealed that lung diseases, such as mesothelioma, kill more people in the UK than in most other European countries.
Only seven other European countries, most of which have under-developed health systems, have a higher respiratory death rate than the UK.
The report also shows that more women than men suffer fatalities as a result of lung diseases including pneumonia, asthma, lung cancer and occupational lung disease.
Occupational diseases such as mesothelioma, caused by exposure to asbestos fibres, are increasing in the UK.
Respiratory disease costs the NHS £6.6bn and this gives some explanation as to why mesothelioma sufferers have been denied life-prolonging treatments such as Alimta, which costs around £8,000 for each patient.
