Asbestosis compensation claim – information and advice

Are you considering making an asbestosis compensation claim? If so, we can help you claim the compensation you’re entitled to.

Asbestosis is the scarring of the tissue of the lung which is caused by inhaling airborne asbestos fibres. The term ‘asbestosis’ is often used as a generic term to describe other conditions relating to asbestos such as pleural plaques, mesothelioma, fibrosis, parenchymal fibrosis, pneumoconiosis. However this is incorrect, and is in fact a condition itself.

Asbestosis symptoms
Initially the disease is characterised by a dry cough followed by increased difficulty breathing due to fluid accumulation.

As the disease develops and the lungs become more damaged, shortness of breath occurs even without physical activity. Repeated chest infections and coughing become more prevalent. Another symptom is swollen feet and hands.

Asbestosis diagnosis
Diagnosis involves the doctor listening with a stethoscope placed over the lungs to listen for abnormal sounds called crackles. The doctor may also use a chest x-ray or a chest computed tomography (CT) to reveal any changes characteristic of asbestosis. Chest x-rays can expose shadows or spots which suggest the presence of asbestosis. The patient might be asked to give blood samples which will be measured to show concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

A lung biopsy may be needed for the diagnosis, but this is unlikely. If the x-ray or CT scan highlights any tumour, then a doctor will perform a biopsy.

Asbestosis treatment
There is no cure for asbestosis and therefore any treatment will be used to help patients deal with the symptoms and prevent other health problems. Treatment may include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Regular exercise – to improve lung capacity
  • Oxygen therapy – relieves shortness of breath
  • Ultrasonic, cool-mist humidifiers may used to help alleviate symptoms
  • Thoracentesis – draining of fluid from around the lungs
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Surgery – removal of tumour or lung transplantation (in extreme cases)
